Burnt stuff makes you pretty.

My mom burnt the bacon this morning. To some, this would be disappointing or annoying, but I like the taste of burnt food. Now, before you start to curl your nose up at the screen and start to judge me, you need to read my explanation as to why I enjoy burnt foods.
As I explained in my first blog post, my Nana watched my brother and I in the mornings before school and on school breaks while my parents worked, so we spent A LOT of time at her house. My Nana is an amazing cook and baker, but she isn't always perfect and would sometimes get distracted watching the news or talking to us and leave the bacon on the skillet too long, inevitably burning it. She would yell, "Oh shoot! I burned it!" in her high pitched Nana voice, but then before we got too upset about it she would come back with, "Oh it's alright! Burnt stuff makes you pretty anyways!" We would laugh and laugh and I would happily eat that burnt bacon because I obviously wanted to be prettier (duh). This became such a common thing that I actually began to enjoy when she burnt food, not only because I actually started to believe that it had magical beauty powers, but also because I liked it extra crunchy anyways and thought it brought an interesting flavor to it. (It's just as confusing to me, but Nana can convince me of anything OK?)
This phrase has now become a running joke in our family, and while it started off as something to just get us to eat a burnt piece of food, so that my Nana wouldn't have to take time out of her day to make another one, it became something I started to live by. So, when something went wrong in my life, whether big or small, in the back of my mind I always thought, "Oh well, burnt stuff makes you pretty!"
I mean think about it! The horrible, negative things that have happened in our lives that we never expected and that we had to dig down deep and trudge through to get out on the other side, are ultimately the moments that formed us into the people we are today. Without those horrible "burnt" days, we wouldn't be able to appreciate the amazing days that we do have. Which ultimately makes us look back on those times and think about how they were almost worth it because you wouldn't be the beautiful person you are today without them.
Another lesson to learn from this phrase, is to start making negative parts of your life into positive things. We obviously all have things in life that we don't enjoy, but if you start to see how these things are improving your life or just doing something beneficial in your life, then it will start to make them even more enjoyable. Now, if the thing isn't benefiting you or is actually making your life worse, then that bacon is TOO burnt and you need to throw it out because honey we are not animals!!
Challenge:Take something you hate doing and make it enjoyable in some way this week! It's small things that start to change your mindset, so start here!
